Freehold or leasehold in Sanur: what the difference means for you

When you browse property in Sanur you will see a tenure on every listing: freehold or leasehold. The tenure decides how long you can hold the property and what you can do with it, so it is worth understanding before you fall for a villa.

What the terms mean

Freehold means owning the property with no fixed end date. Leasehold gives you the right to use the property for a set number of years. On our leasehold listings you will find the lease expiry date, the years remaining and any details about extending the lease.

Questions to ask

  • How many years are left on the lease?
  • Is there an option to extend, and on what terms?
  • What can the property be used for (zoning)?
  • Who can hold this type of title?

Rules about who can hold each type of title differ, and the paperwork matters. Before you commit to a purchase, speak to an independent notary or legal adviser. If you would like help finding the right kind of listing, send us an enquiry and tell us what you are looking for.
